Do you need to know where to park when you visit Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport? There’s an app for that now.

Need to find a restroom, restaurant or gift shop near your gate? The app covers that, too.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has officially launched a mobile app for smartphones that is designed to keep travelers in the know about flights, parking, shops, restaurants and airport services.

It’s available as a free download for iPhones, iPads, Android devices and BlackBerry smartphones. Like similar free apps, it promises to give travelers real-time flight information and updates, and has a “within five minutes of my gate feature” that locates food, newsstands and shopping options near users’ boarding gates.

Airport apps are already available for Los Angeles International and Burlington, Vt.; and for a longer list of European destinations including London’s Heathrow; Amsterdam; Zurich, Switzerland; and Frankfurt, Hamburg and Cologne Bonn, Germany.

The DFW app was designed from feedback given by DFW passengers who volunteered as beta testers over a two-month time frame last fall.

A number of others apps, ranging from free to $3.99, contain information on a multitude of airports:

• GateGuru and iFly Airport Guide provide detailed maps with passenger-submitted checkpoint wait times, user ratings and deals for hundreds of airports worldwide. Both free and available on iPhone and Android.
• FlightBoard lists all arrivals and departures for more than 4,000 airports around the globe; data is refreshed every five minutes. $3.99. Android, iPhone, iPad.
• GoHow Airport lets those with multiple-connection itineraries create a personalized profile with information needed on each leg of your journey.
