Every year we get really excited to see what the hot trends will be for the meeting and events industry. It’s almost like being a kid in a candy store, looking at the new colors, products and foods. Here’s a sampling of the hottest, and boy are they haute!
Colors: Do the tangerine tango
As designers, we wait patiently each year for fall colors to come to life and inspire us. There is always one color that sets the standard, and this year Pantone (the official keeper of colors) has chosen a brilliant and exotic burst of orange, with the name “tangerine tango.”
Tangerine tango is beautiful blended “reddish-orange” that makes you want to have a party just by looking at it. The color has gone global, and you will see it in fashion, home furnishings and the event world. Many rental companies have gone the orange route, designing everything from lounge furniture to chargers and linens to match the energetic, spirited color.
Tangerine tango pairs nicely with nearly every other color in the spectrum. It will be easy to incorporate as much – or as little – as you desire to create the pop your client seeks, without being too in-your-face.
Technology: We’ll take … Paris
I believe the hottest trend in all of the events world right now is the push for new technology. My favorite is 3D Image Mapping, which uses multiple images and display technologies much like video games use computer-generated graphics to interact and engage gamers. 3D Image Mapping uses computer-generated content – mapped (or projected) onto a real surface in real time – to create an illusion or to manipulate those surfaces.
So what does this mean? Basically an image is projected on a surface, building or object to trick guests into thinking they are actually seeing what is projected in 3D.
For example, you can project the Eiffel Tower onto the side of a building and feel like you are standing in Paris. It takes you to another place, simply by using a computer graphic image. This technology is still being perfected, and it’s getting more realistic and breathtaking as refinements continue.
Cuisine: It’s trucking
Cuisine is always evolving, and our palettes are appreciative, but sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that take off. Case in point: food trucks.
From gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches to street tacos to cupcakes and beyond, chefs are taking their menus on the road and to the masses. No longer do you have to have a mainstream caterer for your event or meeting, you can call in your local foodies and let your guests dine street-style.
Vendors make it fun and economical by catering via these rolling cafes. There are even vegan and gluten-free trucks in some cities that can be more popular than the mainstream trucks.
We’ve been to some incredible formal parties lately with people lined up around the truck, waiting to choose their own “small plates.” There is nothing like seeing your client dressed to the nines waiting for an order. It creates community, and what could be more fun?
