The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau is partnering with the consulting company Sustentur to promote sustainability in such Mexican destinations as Cancun, Isla Contoy, Isla Holbox, Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morales.
The program is coordinated by a local work group that supports eco-actions in the area and trains local tour operators and businesses on how to be green.
The 2015 Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report, developed by the World Economic Forum, uses 14 pillars to measure markets. Four of those are related to sustainability.
The Cancun area features hotels, environmental management systems and programs to protect certain species including sea turtles and whale sharks. Some hotels offer payment methods through which guests and attendees can donate to the conservation of rainforests. For details, contact the Cancun CVB.
