Hotel openings, expansions, acquisitions, renovations and other destination news: July 2011

International

Marriott International plans to open 50 new hotels under its Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand in the next four years. Twenty-four of the new hotels will be in the Asia-Pacific region; nine will be in the Middle East and Africa; four will be in Europe and 12 will be in the Americas.

The Royal Bank of Scotland has taken control of 42 Marriott-branded hotels across the U.K.

Dominican Republic
Salamander Hotels & Resorts is adding two new properties to its portfolio. The Fishing Lodge Cap Cana is scheduled to open to guests on Oct. 1 as a Salamander Marina & Beach Resort. The resort will have a private beach and 302 Mediterranean-style villas with marina views, ranging in size from executive to three-bedroom suites; some will have infinity pools. A second property, the Ocean Club Cap Cana will open in 2012 as a 92-room boutique hotel by the marina.

France
Chateaux & Hotels Collection and Exclusive Hotels plan to join forces to create a new luxury brand and will announce the new name in the coming months. Combined, the company boasts a collection of 560 privately-owned hotels and restaurants.

Mandarin Oriental opened in Paris on June 28. The hotel features 138 guest rooms and 194 square meters of meeting space.

Hotel de Buci in Paris recently reopened after a completing a renovation. Offering 24 boudoir-style rooms, five of which are suites, the hotel now boasts 18th-century-style décor.

Germany
Usedom opened the Steigenberger Grandhotel and Spa seaside resort in Königswinter. The hotel has 183 rooms and suites, four exclusive apartments and 15 conference rooms.

Mexico
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts acquired the Hilton Cancun and will rebrand it Iberostar Cancun.

Saudi Arabia
The number of Muslim pilgrims who visit the holy city of Mecca continues to grow exponentially. In response, the city of Mecca is investing more than $5.5 billion in new developments, including 26 hotels that will add 13,000 rooms for more than 6 million pilgrims.

National

ACCESS Destination Services is joining forces with Experience Florida and Eved Services.  Both companies will be aligned under the ACCESS Destination Services brand.

Air France began Washington-Dulles and San Francisco service to and from Paris for the summer.

Arizona
Montelucia Resort & Spa Scottsdale has been acquired by KSL Capital Partners, a private firm specializing in travel and hospitality.  It will join the KSL Resorts Collection and continue its affiliation with InterContinental Hotels & Resorts as an InterContinental Alliance Resort.

California
Hyatt Hotels purchased three hotels in California from The Hardage Group for $76.5 million: a hotel with 142 rooms in Orange County, a 234-room property in Emeryville and the 194-room Sorrento Mesa hotel in San Diego. All will be rebranded as Hyatt Summerfield Suites hotels. The company plans to spend $15 million on renovations of the properties.

HEI Hotels & Resorts acquired the 350-room Westin Pasadena hotel from MPG Office Trust for $92 million.

Bank of America sold the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe on June 27. It will remain under Ritz-Carlton management.

Maritz, Wolff & Co. has decided to sell the Fairmont San Francisco hotel after failing to obtain city permission to convert a portion of the hotel into a residential building.

Chesapeake Lodging Trust has signed agreements to purchase two California hotels. The company plans to spend nearly $98 million for a $55.5 million hotel in downtown San Diego and a $42.25 million hotel in downtown San Francisco.

Florida
The city of Destin was named one of the “Top 25 Destinations in the United States” by TripAdvisor.
Air France now offers non-stop flights between Orlando and Paris-Charles de Gaulle.

InterContinental Hotels Group has signed a franchise deal to construct the 198-room Holiday Inn Express Panama City, scheduled to open in 2012.

Pebblebrook Hotel Trust has acquired the 148-room Viceroy hotel in downtown Miami for $36.5 million, The hotel, which was built in 2009, is part of the 1,800-unit Icon Brickell condominium complex.

Georgia
The Holiday Inn Atlanta Perimeter completed a multi-million dollar renovation of its 250 guest rooms and 2,805 square feet of meeting space.

Illinois
Construction is moving ahead on the 425-room Marriott hotel in Naperville. The hotel will have 26,000 square feet of meeting space, a ballroom and a full-service restaurant.

Indiana
The Evan Todd Spa and Salon opened at the Conrad Indianapolis. It has five treatment rooms, manicure and pedicure stations and eight full-service salon chairs.

New York
The 607-room InterContinental New York Times Square joined Associated Luxury Hotels International.

LaSalle Hotel Properties will acquire The Park Central Hotel in midtown Manhattan for $405.5 million.

Prudential Real Estate Investors and Dow Hotel Co. purchased the 304-room Huntington Hilton hotel in Long Island.

Wyndham Hotel Group will open a midtown Manhattan-based Tryp hotel in late August or early September as part of its expansion of the Tryp brand, which it acquired from Sol Melia last year. Amenities will include 173 rooms and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Massachusetts
Pebblebrook Hotel Trust has completed its acquisition of the downtown W Boston hotel for $89.5 million. Starwood Hotels & Resorts will continue to manage the 235-room hotel.

Missouri
Developer Dave Parmley has finalized a 20-year franchise agreement with Hilton Hotels Corp. for a 114- room DoubleTree hotel to be built on the site of the current Regency Hotel.

Oklahoma
The 315-room Wyndham Tulsa reopened after completing renovations and rebranding the property, which formerly was a Raddison.

Tennessee
The Chattanoogan hotel, has completed renovations to its guest rooms, ballroom and pre-function space. Refurbishments include new guest room carpet, paint, wall coverings, pillow-top mattresses and a complete renovation of the hotel’s ballroom.

Texas
Developer R.M. Crowe Co. sold the 224-room Hilton Dallas-Park Cities in Preston Center to Virginia-based Apple Nine Hospitality Ownership. Apple REIT Cos., which owns several hotels in Dallas-Fort Worth, plans to upgrade the 11-story building.
