The 484-room Traders Hotel Yangon in Myanmar rebranded as the Sule Shangri-La Yangon following a 2.5-fyear renovation. The hotel has two private meeting rooms, event space in its two restaurants, and top-floor suites that range from 710 to 2,034 square feet.
The 258-room Holiday Inn Sherwood Park Conference Centre opened in Alberta following a $6 million property-wide renovation. The hotel has 17 meeting rooms.
The 201-room Crowne Plaza Kitchener-Waterloo opened in Ontario following a $12 million renovation. It has 17,000 square feet of meeting space.
The 181-room Renaissance Santiago Hotel opened with 12,000 square feet of conference space.
The Hyatt Regency Chongming opened 90 minutes from downtown Shanghai with 235 rooms/suites, five restaurants and a 6,700-sq. ft. ballroom. Other event space is modeled in Hyatt’s new meeting concept called The Campus and styled to mimic university life. The 15,000-sq.f t. Campus has a lecture hall, three classrooms, a social dining space (The Cafeteria) and six Song & Game rooms.
The 282-room Jixian Marriott opened in northern Tianjin with one grand ballroom, one junior ballroom and eight function rooms. It is a low carbon-emission hotel with a carbon-footprint recording system. Guests receive a personal carbon-emission statement when they check out. The hotel won a three-star certificate of green building design from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China.
The Dusit Thani Fudu Qingfeng Hotel in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, opened with 88 guest rooms, four pillar-less banquet halls, four meeting rooms and park space for outdoor events.
The 64-room Park Inn by Radisson Bogota opened with seven meeting and event spaces.
The Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Station opened in the Kyobashi commercial district, occupying the first four floors of the new 21-story Kyobashi Trust Tower. The 150-room hotel has three meeting rooms; the largest holds groups up to 70.
The 214-room Queretaro Zona Krystal opened on the San Luis Potosi Highway near the Queretaro Convention Center. The Holiday Inn-branded hotel has flexible meeting space for up to 260 guests.
The Hilton Mexico City Santa Fe opened with 260 guest rooms and more than 8,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a ballroom and rooftop level with city views. The mezzanine level houses a business center and six boardrooms.
The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam opened with 93 guest rooms, seven meeting and event rooms, and a grand ballroom that can hold 160 guests.
The Riu Playa Blanca, in the Coclé province, opened with 573 guest rooms, one conference room and a garden/pool area measuring more than 50,000 square feet.
The 115-room Aranwa Paracas opened on Paracas Bay along Peru’s coast, three hours from Lima. The hotel has two pools, three restaurants and a convention center with an auditorium for up to 470 people, three lecture rooms and a chapel that holds 150.
The 172-room/suite Radisson Blu Mammy Yoko Hotel, Freetown, opened as the first five-star hotel in the country. It has three conference rooms.
The 282-room Courtyard by Marriott Seoul Pangyo opened in a 19-story complex, occupying the top 11 floors, with offices, retail shops, restaurants and coffeehouses below. The hotel has seven meeting rooms.
The 85-room Hotel Indigo Madrid — Gran Via opened with one meeting room that holds 14 guests.
The 279-room/suite Shangri-La Hotel opened in Lhasa with 10 rooms for private dining, 12 function rooms and the city’s largest ballroom at more than 2,500 square feet.
Trinidad and Tobago
The 243-room Radisson Hotel Trinidad opened in Port of Spain with flexible event space for up to 1,200 people.
The Wyndham Irvine – Orange County Airport completed a renovation updating its 335 guest rooms and 7,500 square feet of meeting space.
The 163-room Hard Rock Palm Springs opened with indoor and outdoor event space that includes the 9,504-sq. ft. Woodstock ballroom (divisible by three), the 900-sq. ft. Roxy room and the 2,272-sq. ft. Imagine lawn. Two boardrooms accommodate up to 25 attendees each.
The Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego joined ALHI.
Harrah’s Resort Southern California in San Diego opened its 403-room hotel tower, part of a $160 million makeover. The hotel, gaming area, restaurants/bars and poolside pavilion total 1.2 million square feet, including more than 24,000 square feet of function space.
The 1888 Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island near San Diego completed a $13 million refurbishment that included 368 guest rooms in the original building, 214 guest rooms in the Ocean Towers, 97 pool cabanas, the lobby, restaurants and bar. The hotel has 65,000 square feet ofindoor and outdoor event space across 28 oceanfront acres.
The 215-room Denver Marriott Westminster opened on the Denver-Boulder traffic corridor with 12,000 square feet of event, ballroom and meeting space.
The LEED Silver-designed Westin Wilmington opened with 180 guest rooms, a 2,100-sq. ft. legal center with private offices and a hospitality area for meals. Combined with the adjacent Chase Center on the Riverfront, the complex has a total of 92,000 square feet of conference space.
District of Columbia
The 1,175-room Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C., which opened with more than 100,000 square feet of function space and a glass roof, is connected to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center via an underground concourse.
The Hyatt Dulles International Airport completed a $3.2 million renovation to its 316 guest rooms/suites and added a 29,000-sq. ft. executive meeting center.
The 78-room Courtyard Atlanta/Conyers opened with 1,400 square feet of meeting space for up to 90 attendees. Also available: the Marriott Refreshing Business Lobby equipped with media pods, Wi-Fi and seating zones for pop-up meetings.
Aloft Atlanta Downtown opened with 254 rooms and three meeting rooms, the largest of which will hold 80 guests.
The 361-room Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that upgraded all guest rooms and the lobby. The hotel has a total of 5,727 square feet of flexible meeting space.
Expedia’s elite users named Peppermill Spa Resort & Casino in Reno the top hotel in North America. The 1,635-room Peppermill has three ballrooms, flexible meeting rooms for up to 300 attendees, four penthouses that each hold 125 and a designated private dining area.
Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott renovated its lobby and 30,000 square feet of meeting space. Its 10,000-sq. ft. Grand Ballroom has energy-saving lighting and the foyer features three double doors, allowing planners to bring in large displays such as vehicles or airplanes.
The Princeton Marriott at Forrestal completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that included all 290 guest rooms and added refrigerators to each. The hotel has 35,000 square feet of meeting space.
The Ludlow opened on Manhattan’s Lower East Side with luxury apartments, 184 guest rooms and 20 suites.
The 1,985-room New York Hilton Midtown refurbished 187 guest rooms and 41 suites on floors 39-44. Improvements planned for Phase 2 renovations include updating the hotel’s 25,000-sq. ft. Grand Ballroom and the 12,716-sq. ft. Sutton Hall and Nassau ballroom complex.
The Courtyard Cleveland Airport North completed a renovation of its 121 guest rooms/suites. The hotel has two meeting rooms that total a combined 950 square feet.
The Residence Inn Portland Downtown/Pearl District opened with 223 suites and 4,100 square feet of meeting space, including 2,010-sq. ft. and 425-sq. ft. ballrooms and 1,600 square feet of pre-function space.
The AAA Four Diamond-rated Chattanoogan Hotel completed renovations on its 25,000-sq. ft. conference center. It comprises 20 meeting rooms, a 16-seat circular boardroom with a flat data screen, 12 breakout rooms, a 7,500-sq. ft. ballroom and an amphitheater that seats 85. Event planning services expanded to include culinary team-building events and private themed dining at the hotel or the Tennessee Aquarium.
The 79-room Hampton Inn in Carrizo Springs opened with 1,000 square feet of meeting space.
