Earth Day 2012 arrives this Sunday. What do you do to keep the planet green?
Meeting planners have been thinking about the environment for a while. And at least two industry organizations — the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) and American Express Meetings & Events — are helping keep the issue in the forefront.
A recent global forecast from American Express, for example, found that meeting planners worldwide consider the environment more and more often in their planning processes and actively look for ways to include green elements in their meetings.
So the interest is strong, but going green hasn’t been easy for meeting planners. The inability to accurately measure the environmental impact of green strategies has been a major challenge.
To help resolve this, American Express Meetings & Events and its Maxvantage arm recently expanded a program with Green Hotels Global to help hotels determine and disclose metrics on environmental performance. This will make it possible for planners to more clearly identify and quantify how green a particular venue might be.
Greening answers and strategies also can be found through the GMIC and its 2012 Sustainable Meetings Conference, which opens Sunday and runs through Wednesday in Montreal. If you’re reading this (!) and haven’t made plans to go, you can attend virtually. A virtual pass is $45 and is good for Monday and Tuesday.
