OK, you have a bit more time to get your passport if you’re traveling by air between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico or Bermuda. The official deadline was moved back to Jan. 23, 2007 (originally set for Jan. 1, then moved to Jan. 8).
For now, the date for compliance for land and sea travelers has been set for June 1, 2009 (originally set to coincide with air deadlines). Authorities say if the agencies involved get their act together, then that deadline may be moved forward. But don’t hold your breath. Supposedly, an affordable alternative to the passport is being developed, too, but no launch dates for that have been announced.
