For the past nine years, Singapore has been Asia’s top convention city, according to global rankings from the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). It’s also one of the Top 5 convention cities in the world.
ICCA’s CEO Martin Sirk attributes the city’s success to its proactive pursuit of the MICE (meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition) market. “[It] was probably the first destination in the world to so closely align this meetings strategy with the economic goals of the country,” he says.
More than a quarter of all Singapore’s visitors are business travelers, and the country’s convention industry continues to grow. Fourteen events were added to the city’s convention calendar in 2010. But within the first six months of 2011 alone, 12 new international conventions were secured, including the 2013 ACI World Congress, the 2013 World Federation of Engineering Organizations Congress, the 2014 World Diamond Congress and the 2015 International Congress of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy.
