The attendees’ shuttle bus was driven right up to the goal posts, where the Saints Tunnel, flame columns and confetti canons brought guests into the stadium as if they were sports heroes. Announcing their names on the Jumbotron and over the PA system reinforced the feeling.
Tables were set along the 50-yd. line between a jazz band and a speaker’s podium. Presentations appeared on the stadium’s high-definition screens, and the luncheon concluded with a gospel choir from public school McDonough 35.
Alas, footballs and tees set up on the 20-yd. line disabused guests of any dreams of pro-football stardom, as it quickly became evident there wasn’t a golden foot in the house.
